ABSTRACT

Congenital heart defects (CHD) represent the most frequent congenital defects, and significantly contribute to both perinatal and postnatal mortality and morbidity. The Czech Republic belongs to countries with a high prenatal detection rate of CHD as a result of the close collaboration between gynaecologists and pediatric cardiologist. The article is focused on principles of examination of the fetal heart. The crucial importance of appropriate perinatal and postnatal management of neonates with critical CHD on immediate and long-life prognosis was highlighted as well.
